Joe Pernice and Norman Blake Ready EP With New Band, The New Mendicants
New year, new band: Because Joe Pernice isn’t busy enough with other projects and prognosticating about baseball for Rolling Stone, he and Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Mike Belitsky have formed a new trio called the New Mendicants, which will soon release a new 6-song EP. (Today’s post is brought to you by the word “new.”) The band, and EP, came about so Pernice and Blake would have something to hawk at the merch stand on an upcoming tour of Australia (Belitsky joined the group after the travel arrangements were made, so he’s not going).
The “Australia 2013″ EP, available to pre-order here, contains three new songs, two versions of Pernice and Blake covering themselves and one INXS tune, because, Pernice’s manager cracks, “the Australian government requires musicians wishing to tour Australia release an INXS cover before they will issue the necessary work visas.”
Also in the works are a Pernice Brothers record, and the first Scud Mountain Boys release since “Massachusetts” in 1996. Those records are supposedly due sometime this year. In the meantime, you can content yourself with their INXS cover, “This Time.”
