Debut by ARMS, side project of Harlem Shakes guitarist, finally sees U.S. release

Everybody has a side project.

In this case, “everybody” is Todd Goldstein, guitarist for the Brooklyn indie-pop band Harlem Shakes. His side project is ARMS, a musical persona that started, as so many do, as a lo-fi outlet in his bedroom in 2004. Since then, ARMS has become a buzzed-about band in its own right, thanks to raves in NME, Q and Dusted.

None of that would mean a damn thing, though, if Goldstein and ARMS didn’t deliver. He does on “Kids Aflame,” the title track from ARMS’ debut, which gets a U.S. release Oct. 27. It’s a pleasant, catchy song that finds Goldstein delivering vocals in an offhand, bemused way over ukulele strumming.
