Basia Bulat gives away aching 'Gold Rush' to preview second full-length LP

Canadian singer Basia Bulat made a splash in indie-folk circles with her 2007 debut, “Oh, My Darling,” a bright collection of endearing acoustic songs dressed up with strings, percussion and crystalline vocal harmonies.

Sounds like she’s continuing in that vein on the follow-up, “Heart of My Own,” out Jan. 26 on Rough Trade. The first song, “Gold Rush,” opens with the sound of a lone staccato fiddle, followed by acoustic guitar and Bulat’s sweet, mournful voice. The song builds to a tumble of strings, drums and voices as Bulat sings lyrics that blend the implacable eternity of nature with aching loss. Powerful stuff.
