Wisconsin's Blessed Feathers have a message for Florida on new free song

Relocating from Florida to Wisconsin in the middle of winter requires a hardy soul, which Blessed Feathers frontman Donivan Berube seems to possess. Not only did he drive from the Sunshine State into the middle of a Wisconsin blizzard, he did it when he was 17 and had also just disassociated himself from the Jehovah’s Witnesses. The next step, obviously, was forming a band, which he did with Jacquelyn Beaupre, a woman he met while working in a restaurant in West Bend, Wis.

As their lives intertwined at home as well as at work, they began playing songs together, eventually winnowing their best five to the track listing of their debut EP, “Peaceful Beasts in an Ocean of Weeds,” which features contributions from Shearwater/Swans member Thor Harris. They’re giving away the song “Hey! All You Floridians,” a gentle, catchy and folky song with gossamer vocal harmonies and lyrics expressing sympathy for migrant workers — another group of people with hardy souls — and telling tourists not to act so childish.

The band also teamed with Peter Wolf Crier on this cover of “Porcelain” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “Peaceful Beasts in an Ocean of Weeds” is due Oct. 9.
