With a new album due at the end of the summer, Bob Mould fulfills every last one of our hopes and desires with “The Descent,” the first song he’s let slip. It’s vintage Mould: fast, loud and wonderfully bombastic, like getting pummeled by punk rock in the most loving way possible.

The album, “Silver Age,” is due Sept. 4 on Merge, which also just repackaged and reissued the Sugar catalog. Sounds like maybe hearing the old jams — and performing “Copper Blue” on tour — might have helped Bob get fired up for the new stuff. Fine by us.
