The Edinburgh band returns Jan. 11 with “Let Me Come Home,” its second full-length. Singer Jamie Sutherland says in press notes for the album that his inspirations included the movies “Badlands” and “East of Eden,” and albums by Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, Calexico and early R.E.M.
Broken Records synthesized them well, in that the songs on “Let Me Come Home” sound very much like Broken Records. In the interest of building buzz, the band is giving away a pair of tunes. Album opener “A Leaving Song” climbs a towering column of guitar sheathed in dark, moody strings and topped with Sutherland’s urgent, pleading vocals.
“A Darkness Rises Up” goes for a scuzzier guitar sound, sweetened with violin and pushed along by a relentless beat. It’s powerful stuff from a band that looks fully set to come fully into its own.
