Foxygen Drummer Finds Time for Diane Coffee Solo Project

Given Foxygen’s on-again, off-again relationship with performing live — the band canceled a European tour earlier this year, and just backed out of a string of dates when singer Sam France broke his leg last week during the band’s first song at a Minneapolis show — it seems like drummer Shaun Fleming has plenty of time to work on his own material as Diane Coffee.

The project began when Fleming moved to New York earlier this year and was immediately felled by a flu virus. Laid up in his shared apartment, and running low on money, he spent two weeks holed up in his bedroom writing and recording songs for “My Friend Fish,” his debut LP as Diane Coffee. One of those songs is “Hymn,” a dreamy tune that blends gently drifting organ with understated guitar arpeggios and hazy vocals, before sliding into a speeded-up Beatles-esque section that resolves back into the psychedelic sounds that preceded it.

“My Friend Fish” is due Oct. 29 on Western Vinyl.
