This is cool: after four years, Erin McKeown has finally completed work on the musical she’s been writing with Pulitzer-winning playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes. Well, completed it enough for the La Jolla Playhouse in California to include it in their 2016/17 season, at any rate.

“Miss You Like Hell” follows a “free-spirited mother” and “her whip-smart teenage daughter” as they drive across the country, encountering people along the way who bring them “closer to understanding what sets them apart — and what connects them forever.” There’s no official opening date yet, but the musical will be part of  a workshop series in La Jolla in February.

When she’s not busy working on musicals, McKeown records and tours from her base in western Massachusetts (she was terrific when she opened for the Mountain Goats at Pearl Street in Northampton in 2014). She’s been releasing albums since 1999, including the excellent LPs “Distillation” in 2000, “We Will Become Like Birds” in 2005, the imaginative collection of standards “Sing You Sinners” in 2007 and the iconoclastic “F*ck That! Erin McKeown’s Anti-Holiday Album” in 2011 (see her video for “Christmas: Love It or Leave It” below).

Lear deBessonet will direct “Miss You Like Hell” in La Jolla.
