Eulogies balances emotional extremes on free song from new album, due Jan. 18

A lot of songwriters do what they do as a way of making sense of the world and their place in it. Eulogies leader Peter Walker has had a lot to try making sense of over the past couple years.

He became a father in May 2008, just a week before his best friend’s 4-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that proved fatal 13 months later. Eulogies’ forthcoming album, “Tear the Fences Down,” is Walker’s attempt at reconciling the wildly divergent emotional extremes he experienced over those months.

“You Hide,” the free song, suggests he struck an elegant, sensitive balance. The song features a gently insistent rhythm, a lush mixture of guitar and bass and Walker singing words of empathetic encouragement. Though his subject matter offers great (and understandable) potential for a total bummer record, Eulogies instead aims for catharsis and finds transcendence.

“Tear the Fences Down” is due Jan. 18 on Dangerbird.
