Drive-By Truckers leader Patterson Hood helped turn us on to Centro-matic a few years back, so we listen when he starts talking about bands he likes. Lately, he’s talking about Futurebirds.
The band traces its origins to a rare snowstorm in Athens, Ga., a couple years ago, when the musicians holed up in the studio for a night to pass the time. They emerged with a 6-song EP, then a full-length debut last year called “Hampton’s Lullaby.” Before embarking on the next project, the band is releasing a remastered version of the EP, as a digital download and on 150-gram vinyl.
Hood likes their harmonies, and we can hear why on “Dirty D,” the free song. It’s a lazy, hazy song that sounds as if it’s coming from a distance, with echoing vocals and chiming guitar. Sounds like a winner to us. “Futurebirds EP’ is due April 19 on Autumn Tone.
