Hey Marseilles hints at sunny, earnest orchestral pop with song from debut LP

Now that it’s finally feeling like spring, how about a little music for a lovely spring (Friday) afternoon? Why, that’d be Hey Marseilles, an orchestral pop band from Seattle.

The six-piece group (can you spot the indie-rockers in the photo above?) makes earnest, lilting music, with guitars buoyed up by violin, viola and accordion on the band’s forthcoming debut, “To Travel & Trunks,” due June 29 on Onto Entertainment.

“The song are pretty personal,” singer and guitarist Matthew Bishop says. “There’s a lot about love, struggles with belief and sense of self. My songs don’t necessarily come to any particular conclusions on the above topics; they mostly open them up for further exploration.”

Track 4, “Rio,” is a particular gem: festive handclaps at the start lay a rhythmic bed for strings that swell with a wistful ebb and flow and Bishop’s mellow voice.
