Who Better Than Jack White to Advise Kermit the Frog?

There’s something oddly comforting about the news today that Jack White will appear on the season finale of “The Muppets.” Who even knew “The Muppets” had season finales?

White’s appearance on the latest version of the venerable show casts him in the role of agony aunt for Kermit the Frog. From the press release: “After her stint in the hospital, Miss Piggy and Kermit reevaluate their relationship, and Kermit turns to Jack for help and advice.” Oh? Grover was busy?

It’s playing against type in an excellent way. Though he’s plenty earnest, White has built a mythology around himself that wouldn’t seem to leave much room for the openness and innocence required to hang with Kermit. And he’s had plenty of his own relationship difficulties, from fistfights to public denunciations to good old-fashioned shit-talk. So the notion that someone as guarded as it seems like White can be would soften enough to help a frog puppet win back his pig soulmate is at once tender and comic. Perfect for “The Muppets,” in other words.

Plus, just think how great White and Animal would sound together. “The Muppets” season finale, titled “Because … Love,” airs March 1 at 8 p.m. Eastern on ABC.

In the meantime, here’s the (too intense for “The Muppets”) video for “Impossible Winner,” the latest single from White’s band the Dead Weather. The group’s album “Dodge and Burn” came out last fall.
