Western Massachusetts Bands Head to Austin for SXSW

It will be a strong showing for the Pioneer Valley next week at this year’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, with Speedy Ortiz, Potty Mouth, Gone by Daylight and Jamie Kent, who’s back with the second incarnation of his Rockin’ Riverboat showcase.

Last year Northampton troubadour Kent made a, um, splash by renting a riverboat, loading it up with artists including Erin McKeown, another Valley favorite, and cruising up and down the Colorado River. In addition to Kent and his band the Options, this year’s version features WaveRadio, the Yawpers, Boy Wonder, Jeff Campbell and Sirsy on the upper deck, and Dave Gutter, Megan Slankard, Nate and Andrew Antar and Don Gallardo on the acoustic deck. The showcase happens Thursday, March 13, from 7-10 p.m. RSVP through Do512 (though be warned: an RSVP doesn’t guarantee entry). The showcase is sponsored by Bose and Hearo.fm.

Fast on the heels of their “Real Hair” EP, Northampton band Speedy Ortiz’s gigs include the Stereogum day party March 13 as part of House of Vans at Mohawk, and the A.V. Club’s day party (on a bill that includes Bob Mould) March 14 at Blackheart Bar on Rainey Street, which is where the action at South-by seems to be migrating. Northampton rockers Potty Mouth, who last year released “Hell Bent,” are playing a whopping eight sets throughout the week, including the Brooklyn Vegan day party and Old Flame Records showcase on March 15.

Chicopee group Gone by Daylight is celebrating SXSW with the release Tuesday of a new single, “Anywhere Away From You,” and seven performances at the festival, including an acoustic set on March 14 at the venerable Continental Club on South Congress.
