Why all the hate for Lana Del Rey? Here’s a theory

Lana Del Rey has come from relative obscurity to become one of the most divisive figures in pop music these days, and that’s fascinating.

Sure, she blew it on “Saturday Night Live,” and it’s hard to tell how heavy a hand her label, Interscope, has had in shaping her new album, “Born to Die.” But the level of hate she’s attracted seems out of all proportion with her music, or even her persona.

Or maybe we hate her because she’s a more accurate reflection of ourselves than we’d like to admit. That’s the idea behind this review of “Born to Die” that ran on my Courant blog in January.
