Jana Hunter readies debut LP from new band, Lower Dens, with two free songs

While working on her third solo release last year, Baltimore singer and songwriter Jana Hunter diverted the songs she had written into a new band, Lower Dens, which is ready with a debut album and a sprawling fall tour.

Hunter had worked with an array of lo-fi folk-ish artists, from Castanets to Devendra Banhart, while releasing a pair of LPs under her own name, along with some EPs and a split-LP with Banhart.

Lower Dens formed out of her search for a full-time backing band, and the quartet makes music for vast spaces: guitars and vocals are saturated in reverb, drums shimmer over deep, dry bass and Hunter sings in a potent murmur.

No word yet on a release date for Lower Dens’ full-length debut, “Twin Hand Movement,” but here’s a pair of mp3s to tide you over.
