Chicago's Musikanto hones rootsy edge on new free song

We have a certain fondness for rootsy indie-rock with a melancholy tinge, so naturally we have a fondness for Musikanto.

The Chicago singer and songwriter has a folky edge that reminds us of New England’s own Mark Erelli, and a way with lyrical imagery that justifies the various Ryan Adams comparisons. Also, Musikanto is his real name (first name of Mike), which is a happy coincidence.

Anyway, he returns Aug. 2 with a new album, “Sky of Dresses,” that follows up his 2009 release “Ghost Pain.” The free song, “Every Which Way,” puts a wistful accordion line atop acoustic guitar and a dusty shuffle beat, and Musikanto sings in a tuneful voice with a touch of heartbroken grit. Good stuff.
