Album review: Stark Raving Lulu's 'Welcome to the Fun-O-Sphere!'

Garage-rock was never about reinventing music — it’s always been about turning up and rocking out, something Stark Raving Lulu does admirably well on “Welcome to the Fun-O-Sphere!”

The Connecticut foursome’s self-released debut is eight tracks of hooky rock ‘n’ roll drawn from vintage girl-groups, with a dash of ’70s punk attitude. The Lulus keep it simple, even classic, with nothing more than vocals, guitar, bass and drums, namechecking a main-ingredient influence on “Shangri-Las,” shifting tempos around heavy guitar riffage on “Eye for an Eye” and toying with power-pop on the catchy, snarky “Hail to the Sucker Queen.”

The songs whip past with a certain homemade charm, which lends them a primal immediacy. “Welcome to the Fun-O-Sphere” isn’t revolutionary, but it’s definitely fun, and that was the point all along.

Stark Raving Lulu plays a CD release party with the Peacock Flounders and the Sawtelles Saturday, July 7, at Cafe Nine, 250 State St., New Haven. There’s a $5 cover, doors open at 8 p.m. Information: 203-789-8281 or cafenine.com.
