Every time we turn around there’s some new genre we’ve never heard of before, like “post-gospel.” We don’t know what it means, but it supposedly describes the sound of New Orleans band Sun Hotel.
We would have gone more with dense, noisy, sorta lo-fi rock on “Talks,” the free song from the band’s new EP. It’s a bit of a sprawler, and songwriter Tyler Scurlock sings in an imperturbable voice while thick guitars and barrages of drums crash around him before receding toward the end of the tune.
The song is the first of five on “Gifts,” which comes out Oct. 11 on Chinquapin Records. Sun Hotel co-founded the label with friends in Caddywhompus.
