New York rockers The Beets give away songs from new LP

It takes a certain skill to play rock ‘n’ roll that sounds as if it’s about to come flying off the rails, and The Beets do it better than most.

The New York group, the brainchild of Uruguayan transplants Juan Wauters and Jose Garcia, went through a number of drummers before adding Chie Mori in time to record the band’s latest, “Let the Poison Out.” It’s the Beets’ third album, and it has a loose-limbed, lo-fi charm on free songs “Friends of Friends” and “Doing As I Do.” The former is twitchy and frenetic, with guitar jangling under shouted unison vocals; the latter is less jittery, with more immediately tuneful vocals that sound like something the Kinks might have toyed with in 1965.

“Let The Poison Out” is due Oct. 24 on Hardly Art, and if you’re hitting CMJ this week, the Beets perform today, Tuesday, at 4 p.m. at NY Pianos, do a DJ set Thursday at 5:30 at NY Solas and perform again Friday at NY Death By Audio.
