There's no escaping doom: Wino returns with sludgy new band, Premonition 13

Although we applaud Scott “Wino” Weinrich for trying something different last year on his solo album, “Adrift,” the acoustic songs just didn’t pack the punch of St. Vitus or the Obsessed, the doom metal bands he’s spent his career leading.

He’s back to form with his new project, Premonition 13, a band immersed in the sorts of sludgy guitars and portentous vocals that elevate denim stained with motorcycle grease into a calling. Wino founded the band with longtime friend Jim “Sparky” Karow, who he’s known since the Obsessed days in the late ’70s. According to their publicist, “the two bonded over jam sessions and discussions on Mesoamerican culture and magnetism.” As you do.

The Mesoamerica thing makes sense in the context of “La Hechicera de la Jeringa,” the free song from Premonition 13’s forthcoming debut, “13,” which is due — when else? — on the summer solstice, June 21.
