We Were the States escape Nashville flood to finish LP; give away free song

Who knows what’s up with Murfreesboro, Tenn., but the Nashville exurb is making some first-rate musical contributions: first it was Those Darlins, and now it’s We Were the States.

The latter’s sophomore album was very nearly delayed when this year’s Nashville flood dumped two feet of water in the basement studio where the quintet was recording “Rasa.” The relocated, persevered and quickly finished the album, which is out now on Chicken Ranch Records.

“Gold,” the free song, is a terse rocker packed full of bristling guitars and drums that pack a wallop behind Justin Webb’s startling, vivid rock-star vocals, and if We Were the States is new to you, it’s a riveting introduction to one of Murfreesboro’s finest.
